Adane Girma remains in history as one of the most recognizable faces of Ethiopian football over the last two decades. Born in 1985, the player built a reputation as an exceptionally versatile footballer who could be equally effective in the heart of the defense or at the tip of the attack. Few athletes possess such a broad spectrum of skills, allowing them to transition from the role of a full-back to the league’s leading goalscorer.
Goalscoring instincts and club success
His club career is closely linked to two of Ethiopia’s major teams. It all began at Hawassa Kenema in 2007, but his true rise occurred after moving to Saint George. It was there that Girma unleashed his full potential in the attacking line. The 2010-11 season became his “golden hour” when he won the league’s Player of the Year award and shared the top scorer title with 20 goals to his name. After long years of loyal service to the Addis Ababa giant, he chose to finish his professional journey where it all started—returning to Hawassa Kenema in 2018.
The hero of the Africa Cup of Nations
On the international stage, Girma was a pillar of the Ethiopia national team for ten years. His most iconic moment undoubtedly came during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. In an extremely difficult match against the then-defending champions Zambia, Adane showcased his tactical discipline, starting as a central midfielder to bring stability to the squad.
Even when his team was left with ten men for more than an hour of play, Girma did not give up. Moved further forward into the attack, he took advantage of a precise pass from Saladin Said and converted it with a cool finish for the equalizer. This goal not only earned a valuable point for Ethiopia but also cemented his status as a national hero before his final retirement from international football in 2015.
