Ethiopian football has always been a source of hidden talent, but few manage to combine the composure of a playmaker with the work ethic of a defensive midfielder. Amanuel Yohannes is exactly that type of player. Born in 1999, the footballer has already established himself as a key figure in the local league and the national team, proving that a modern midfielder must be able to do it all. His story is an example of perseverance, starting from his early professional steps and reaching prestigious individual honors on the international stage.

The path from Ethiopian Coffee to the great rival

Yohannes’s career began to gain momentum back in the 2015–2016 season when he made his debut for Ethiopian Coffee. For nearly a decade, he was the heartbeat of that team, building a reputation as one of the most stable midfielders in the Ethiopian Premier League. Fans value him for his ability to control the tempo of the match, but in the summer of 2024, the time came for a major change. On September 1, Yohannes made the bold decision to join the ranks of their great rivals, Defence Force. This transfer not only stirred up the fans but also highlighted the player’s ambition to seek new challenges at the peak of his career.

Magic with the national jersey

True recognition of Amanuel’s qualities comes when he puts on the Ethiopia kit. It all started in September 2018 with a debut in a friendly against Burundi. The big breakthrough occurred during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Although Ethiopia faced difficulties against giants like Cameroon and a tough Cape Verde side, Yohannes did not flinch. In the decisive clash against Burkina Faso, he was the absolute master of the pitch. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award, proving he can dominate even against players from leading European leagues. In March 2024, he added another milestone to his biography by scoring his debut goal for the Walyas in a match against Lesotho.

Style of play: Brains and brawn

What makes Yohannes so valuable is the balance in his game. He possesses the rare vision for “defense-splitting” passes that can leave attackers face-to-face with the goalkeeper in just one touch. At the same time, he is not afraid of the “dirty work.” Amanuel is extremely disciplined defensively, constantly covering zones and assisting his defenders during opponent counterattacks. This combination of creativity and physical endurance turns him into the perfect modern midfielder that every coach would want in their squad.
