The Rome Derby returns with both Lazio and Roma aiming to strengthen their push for the top four. Beyond the fierce rivalry, both sides arrive with contrasting fortunes: Lazio continue to grapple with injuries and squad restrictions, while Roma enter with new faces and a stronger run of form.

Lazio: Reinforcements and Limitations

Marco Baroni’s squad has endured its share of setbacks. Defenders Patric, Gigot, and Manuel Lazzari remain doubtful, while Matías Vecino is sidelined through injury. However, the return of experienced center-back Alessio Romagnoli from suspension provides a much-needed boost. On the wings, Gustav Isaksen and Adam Marušić are fit again, giving Lazio width on both flanks.

In attack, Mattia Zaccagni and Taty Castellanos—both on target in the last match—are expected to lead the line. Boulaye Dia, who scored after coming off the bench, adds another option for Baroni. Midfield stability will be anchored by Matteo Guendouzi and Nicolò Rovella, who continue to serve as the backbone of the team.

Due to a recruitment ban, Lazio were limited in the transfer market, managing only to make existing loan deals permanent. That included defenders Nuno Tavares, Gigot, and Luca Pellegrini, along with Rovella and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in midfield. Departures, however, weakened depth—Loum Tchaouna moved to Burnley and Nicolò Casale joined Bologna.

Roma: New Additions and Key Absences

José Mourinho’s Roma also have personnel concerns. Summer signing Leon Bailey remains unavailable due to injury, while Brazilian full-back Wesley is a doubt. Despite these issues, the Giallorossi possess significant attacking power. Matías Soulé, who already has a goal this season, looks ready to establish himself as one of the team’s main threats. He will likely be supported by Paulo Dybala and new striker Evan Ferguson in a potent forward trio.

Midfield dynamo Manu Koné is available after shining during the international break, further strengthening Roma’s spine. The summer window saw a mix of departures and arrivals. Veterans such as Mats Hummels (retired), as well as defenders Abdulhamid (Lens) and Salah-Eddine (PSV), moved on, while Alexis Saelemaekers returned to AC Milan after his loan. In their place, Roma added defenders Ghilardi (Hellas Verona), Wesley (Flamengo), Ziolkowski (Legia Warsaw), and Kostas Tsimikas (Liverpool), along with Lens midfielder Neil El Aynaoui, winger Bailey (Aston Villa), and striker Ferguson (Brighton).

Derby Dynamics and Historical Context

The Derby della Capitale has long been one of Serie A’s most tightly contested fixtures. While recent form tilts in Roma’s favor—they’ve won two of the last five meetings, including a 2–0 victory in January—Lazio still hold an important psychological edge. As the designated “home” team, they haven’t lost a derby to Roma since 2016, a record they will be determined to protect.

Tactically, Lazio are expected to press high, forcing Roma to defend deep and rely on counterattacks. Roma’s compact structure, combined with the pace of Soulé and creativity of Dybala, makes them dangerous in transition. The midfield duel—most likely between Guendouzi and Bryan Cristante—will be crucial in determining who dictates tempo and possession.

Prediction

Despite Lazio’s attacking resurgence in recent weeks, their poor home record in Serie A—ten games without a win—cannot be ignored. Roma, on the other hand, have been strong travelers, with ten victories in their last 14 away matches.

While the atmosphere and rivalry could inspire Lazio, Roma’s balance, squad depth, and consistency on the road suggest they have the upper hand.

Predicted Score: Lazio 0 – 1 Roma

The derby rarely lacks drama, and with both sides eyeing Champions League qualification, this edition promises intensity, tactical intrigue, and a result that could reshape the top-four battle.
