Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview: Team News, Injuries, Lineups & Prediction: 20/9/2025

Manchester United and Chelsea meet in a high-stakes Premier League showdown, with both clubs battling early-season injuries and searching for consistency. Old Trafford sets the stage for a fixture that rarely fails to deliver drama, but both sides enter the match with pressing questions to answer.

United’s Injury Woes and New Faces

United remain without several important figures. Defender Lisandro Martínez continues his spell on the sidelines, joined by summer signing Matheus Cunha, who has been ruled out after picking up an injury. Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot are also doubtful, leaving manager Rúben Amorim with limited options.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has been one of the few consistent performers, already finding the net in the league, while Bryan Mbeumo has made an encouraging start in United colors with one goal. Striker Benjamin Šeško, another high-profile recruit, has been eased in from the bench but may now be in line for a greater role. At the back, French prospect Leny Yoro is growing in influence, though goalkeeper Altay Bayındır is still struggling to fully convince supporters.

The summer saw sweeping changes to United’s squad. High-profile departures included André Onana, Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen, and several attackers—Antony, Højlund, Rashford, Sancho, and Garnacho—all moving on to new clubs. In their place arrived goalkeeper Arnaud Lammens, full-back Diego León, and forwards Cunha, Mbeumo, and Šeško. Amorim has leaned heavily on this refreshed attacking group, but inconsistency remains a challenge.

Chelsea’s Mixed Fortunes

Chelsea arrive in Manchester with their own list of absentees. Mykhailo Mudryk remains suspended due to a doping violation, while Liam Delap, Benoît Badiashile, and Roméo Lavia are sidelined through injury. Dário Essugo and Alejandro Garnacho—ironically signed from United this summer—are also doubts. Cole Palmer could return, though his fitness will be assessed closer to kickoff.

Despite these issues, Chelsea’s attack has shown promise. João Pedro has been central to their early form, contributing two goals and two assists, while Estêvão and Pedro Neto have provided width and pace. Enzo Fernández has chipped in with both goals and creativity from midfield, supported by the ever-industrious Moisés Caicedo.

The Blues were once again active in the transfer market, offloading Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, and Christopher Nkunku while bringing in young talents such as Jorrel Hato, Buonanotte, and the Brazilian wonderkid Estêvão. These moves have injected energy into the squad, though results have been inconsistent.

Tactical Outlook and Prediction

This fixture pits two evolving projects against one another. United are likely to line up with Bayındır in goal, shielded by Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw in a back three. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo should provide width, while Kobbie Mainoo could start alongside Casemiro in midfield. Up front, Fernandes will orchestrate play behind Šeško and Mbeumo.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are expected to stick with their possession-based approach, relying on Fernández and Caicedo to control the middle of the pitch. Out wide, Estêvão and Garnacho could stretch United’s defense, with João Pedro the focal point in attack. Reece James’s potential return at right-back would be a major boost for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

United’s home form and capacity to strike in transition could prove decisive, but Chelsea’s recent dominance in this fixture cannot be ignored. The Blues have won the last four meetings and are unbeaten in 17 league clashes against United. That record gives them a psychological edge heading into Old Trafford.

Prediction: Manchester United 1 – 3 Chelsea

Chelsea’s attacking fluency and superior recent record suggest they will extend their dominance. United may find a goal through Fernandes or Šeško, but defensive frailties and injuries could once again undermine their chances.
