Ethiopian football has its iconic figures, but few can boast a career as dynamic and diverse as Gatoch Panom. The veteran defensive midfielder, who currently captains his national team, continues to write his football story with a fresh challenge. Just days ago, he officially joined the ranks of Al-Arabi in Saudi Arabia, adding yet another exotic destination to his resume.
From Addis Ababa to a historic breakthrough in Russia
It all started for Panom in 2012 at Ethiopian Coffee, where he quickly established himself as a midfield powerhouse. His standout performances didn’t go unnoticed, leading to his first national team call-up in 2014. However, his major breakthrough came in the summer of 2017. He achieved something unprecedented for a local player at the time: moving directly from the Ethiopian league to the Russian Premier League by signing with Anzhi Makhachkala. Although his stint in Russia was brief—and notable for the quirk of being registered with a Chad passport—the transfer remains a historic milestone for his home country.
A traveler across three continents
Following his time in Russia, the midfielder’s career has resembled a true world tour. Panom has suited up for El Gouna in Egypt, played for Al-Anwar in Libya, and even joined the Iraqi side Newroz in early 2025. Between these international adventures, he always found his way back home, lending his expertise to clubs like Mekelle City and Wolaitta Dicha. This ability to adapt quickly to different cultures and leagues has turned him into a natural leader that Ethiopia relies on in its biggest moments.
A new chapter in Saudi Arabia
At 31, Panom shows no signs of slowing down. His recent contract with Al-Arabi proves that his skills as a defensive anchor remain highly valued. Having competed in major tournaments like the African Nations Championship as far back as 2014, he brings invaluable experience to his new side. Al-Arabi fans are already eager to see a player in action who isn’t afraid of a challenge and always gives his all for the crest on his chest.
